Magazine

Above is the process I went through to find useful extracts from magazines. It was hard for me to find magazines solely dedicated to domestic abuse which is why I used a search tool to pinpoint certain extracts in magazines that speak about domestic abuse, I found this tool extremely useful. To check if the extracts that have been found are actually relevant I briefly scanned through them. This meant I did not have to read everything in the extract.

I found magazines the hardest information to find that spoke about forms of abuse. It was especially hard to find magazines that spoke about men being abused. However, the tool I used came up with 100’s of different magazines that I had available to choose from. Not only did I used scanning to extract information I also used skim reading. Skim reading was very useful to me when looking for abuse magazines.

Skim Reading - Skim reading is when you briefly read sections of information instead of reading the whole text. This is useful as it saves time and you get an idea of what you are reading.skim reading is a very useful method to use when reading books or google books online. Some google books are not available in full version, this means I can use skim reading to get a brief overview of the book and the topics it covers throughout the context of the book.

Through research on different search engines I found a magazine that was dedicated to all forms of abuse for teens. The magazine had a unique selling point which was that it only targeted schools. The magazine was sent out free to schools so every teen is aware of abuse.

Index - An index is a page is normally the first page displayed, it contains headings withs numbers down the side, the numbers are page numbers and the headings are what those pages contain information on. An index is extremely useful when extracting information from text as you can go straight to the section containing information without having to use extra time reading through all pages.

Written Sources - Newspaper

Written Sources - Journals

Journals - After extensive research searching the topic of domestic abuse I found a journal called safe issue 4. The contents of this journal gives me insight into domestic abuse. At the beginning of the journal there was a small introduction explaining what they have previously worked on and what they are trying to achieve now by doing this journal.

Representation - Looking at the title of the article I can see that the use of the word safe in the title is used in order to entice vulnerable women, it helps women feel safe where they are as well as reading the article. It sends a clear message to people who are abused by domestic abuse that they are safe.

Written Sources - Websites

Websites - There are many different search engines that I have access to, for example bing, yahoo etc. All of the search tools available on the internet are very useful for me to find good solid information. I need to ensure I look for the best website as there are many different websites available for me to browse on. In an ideal situation I will need to find a website solely dedicated to domestic abuse. This will be a great source of information for me.

Written Sources - Books

Books/Google Books - Another useful source of information would be books. Books are available both in the library and online. Using books to source information online is very resourceful as you have access to look at thousands of books. Some books that are based online are only available to the audience showing a few pages, however, some books show all pages.

Above is the process I went through to access and obtain information on books. I used domestic abuse as an example.

Above is an index page I found which directs you to domestic abuse pages

Activity Extracting information from a document

I have been asked to read through the information above to have a better understanding of what would make a successful fashion magazine. I have decided to relate this information as if I was creating a domestic abuse magazine.

  1. Which method (for example, skim-reading, underlining) did you find most useful for identifying key information?

When reading the information in the table above I found that skim reading was the most useful source of extracting information. I was able to briefly read over the text and had an understanding straight away of what the text meant. The information was short already so on some I read through all of the text. The information given was easy to understand which gave me a good understanding of each term needed to make a successful domestic abuse magazine.

2. How relevant is the information you have extracted?

All of the above information was very useful and relevant to me making a domestic abuse magazine. I recognised that all of these factors are key for the magazine to be a success. When reading skimming through the information given I was comparing this to what it would look like on the front cover of my magazine.

3. Could you edit down that information further still?

I believe I could shorten down the information slightly. However, I feel the detailed description given helped me to properly understand key factors in making a magazine.

Table - Ethical and legal constraints

Unit 2 what kind of information am I looking for

Scenario we are fighting to win a commission to make a short film which will feature as part of a national campaign to raise awareness about domestic abuse. To be successful you must deliver a comprehensive report showing your understanding of the context and issues together with a pitch which effectively presents your film idea to the commissioning team. 1.1 what information am I looking for/ Target audience/Budget/Genre/constraints/ethical considerations etc For my campaign to make a short film, I am going to need to take a look at key factors which will be important in the success of my short film , for example, who my target audience is going to be, what type of budget I will need to work with for the video to be a success as well as what type of content is going to be appropriate to my viewers. The target audience for my short film is going to be people who have already or are being affected by some sort of domestic abuse. Not only do I want to aim it at those affected I also want to aim it at adults between 18-40 to raise awareness of the issue. I want domestic abuse to be spoken about more openly amongst individuals instead of it being an unspoken topic. A budget is the amount of money needed for the production of something, in my case it will be the budget a short film The type of budget I will need is going to be very small for this type of short film, However as it is a national campaign I will probably have more money available to me. To ensure I have a good understanding of how much money is required to make a short film I will research in further detail about budgets to find rough budgeting figures. My budget must cover the production of my short film as well as managing to cover distribution costs. Some concerns may rise during the idea process of my short film. It is my responsibility to ensure the content being shown is appropriate for my target audience. It must be suitable for public consumption, as the topic being covered is so sensitive I have to treat the process of making it very carefully. My final product (short film) must be sensible and age appropriate to be aired. During the production of my short film there may be some constraints that I will face. For example I may not be able to use all my ideas. Legal and ethical considerations distribution/commissioning Similar Products For my short film to be the best it can be I am going to need to look at competitors, I will need a good understanding of all the different domestic abuse short films out at the moment as well as understanding my market. This gives me the chance to look at what they did right and where they went wrong. 1.2 Where will I source all of this information from For me to find out all of the information I spoke about above I will get my sources from google search, Books, journals, magazines, websites, newspapers etc. All of these sources of information are very useful and will provide me with all the detail I need. Certain websites I may look into would be NSPCC, suicide hotline and child line. The reason I have chose these three are because they are the main well known successful abuse websites out there. These websites will help me in my research to make the best short film I can. I can take tips and useful facts and information from their websites. Books will help me in the search for my information, I can find books on google search which will hold a lot of detailed data. raindance film festival - 10 zero budget filmmaking tips sundance film festival Representation - Looking at the title of the article I can see that the use of the word safe in the title is used in order to entice vulnerable women, it helps women feel safe where they are as well as reading the article.
